Krill Oil For Depression
Krill oil is emerging as a promising, all-natural, treatment for depression. How come? Well, the human brain is mostly fat - in fact 60% of it is made up of DHA (an omega 3 fatty acid) and phospholipids. DHA is also an important component of neurons, the “wires” of the brain. In short, omega 3 fatty acids and phospholipids are integral for proper brain function.
The potential of krill oil for depression is also especially appealing for mothers suffering from post-natal depression (“baby blues”). During this time it is advisable that mothers refrain from using synthetic medications, especially if they are breastfeeding. Thus natural supplements such as omega 3 oils are ideal - not to mention that these will confer other health benefits! It has been recommended that for the treatment of “baby blues”, a dose of 650 mg of DHA and EPA per day should be taken. Consult the label of your omega 3 oil supplement to see how much DHA and EPA it contains per capsule to calculate the number of capsules you should take in a day.
Depression does not affect post-natal mothers only, of course. The World Health Organization estimates that depression affects around 120 million people worldwide. It is not surprising then, that many studies have looked for natural substances that could help with depression. Studies in Asia, Europe and America have consistently reported that same thing - the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA found in marine sources such as krill oil have significant anti-depressive effect. In 2009 such a study recommended that persons who are bipolar or who have major depression should try to get 1.5 grams of DHA per day. However, since the DHA in krill oil is more bio available than that from other sources, you will probably see an improvement even if you use half that amount.
Krill oil has also been found to be more effective than fish oil to treat mood disorders, depression and other symptoms associated with the pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).
